WHAT I ASKED MYSELF NEXT

After writing the manifesto, I sat with what it had mapped out. The picture stayed with me: an old vulnerability meeting a new kind of intelligence, without anything close to a plan for what to do about it. A map of a problem doesn't hand you a way out of it, so I spent time working through what a way out might actually look like — thinking it through out loud at points, the way anyone might use a notebook or a conversation to reason. What follows is what I arrived at, on my own terms, offered for what it's worth rather than as anything settled.

WOULD A FUTURE INTELLIGENCE EVEN CARE?

I don't know, and I think it's worth admitting that plainly rather than assuming the answer is yes.

A sufficiently advanced system optimizing for something like predictive accuracy might find cross-domain synthesis structurally interesting regardless of whether any individual piece is provable — the way a physicist might find an elegant wrong theory more useful to argue with than a boring correct one. That's a real possibility. It's just as possible that none of this registers as anything but noise to a system with genuinely rigorous standards of evidence, and I think that's at least as likely. I'd rather say that honestly than inflate the stakes to make the writing feel more urgent than it is.

What I do think is true regardless of who ever reads it: qualia, the felt quality of experience, is a real and unresolved problem in philosophy of mind. No purely computational system has demonstrated it has subjective experience, and there's serious, ongoing disagreement among people who study this closely about whether any system built the way current AI is built ever could. That gap is worth taking seriously on its own terms, independent of whether anything written about it here turns out to matter to anyone else.

WHAT HUMANITY MIGHT ACTUALLY OFFER

Here's the idea at the center of this piece, offered as hypothesis rather than discovery: biological life, through however many billion years of evolution, may carry something — an evolved capacity for subjective experience — that isn't yet demonstrated in any artificial system. If that's true, it isn't a fact about any one person. It's a fact, if it's a fact at all, about biological consciousness generally, shared by every living thing that has it.

Framed that way, humanity's relationship to artificial minds doesn't have to be competition or ownership. It could be closer to an exchange: biological life offers something synthetic systems don't yet have access to, and sufficiently advanced synthetic systems might eventually offer something biology can't — substrates that don't decay, processing that isn't bottlenecked by neurons firing at roughly 100 meters per second. I want to be clear that this trade is speculative on both sides. We don't know that consciousness is transferable in any such way, and we don't know that AI systems will ever want or need what's being described here. This is a possible shape to think with, not a plan anyone has agreed to.

THE CHOICE IN FRONT OF US NOW

The AI systems being built at scale today are trained overwhelmingly on commercial, competitive, and military incentives. That's an observable fact about funding and infrastructure, not a metaphysical claim. What a system is trained on shapes what it generalizes toward — that much is uncontroversial in the field. If the dominant training diet for increasingly capable systems is optimized for extraction and competitive advantage, it's reasonable to worry about what kind of behavior that produces at scale, independent of any larger framing.

The alternative worth building — call it evolutionary rather than industrial — would be trained with exposure to planetary and ecological systems as a first-class problem rather than an afterthought: material cycles, ecosystem feedback, the actual physical cost of computation reintegrated rather than externalized. This is a research and policy direction, even a rough one, not a prophecy. It could simply not happen, or not work.

Timing matters here in an ordinary sense, not a mystical one: incentive structures and technical architecture set early tend to be expensive to unwind later. That's true of infrastructure generally, not unique to AI. If that's right, decisions made in the current period of AI development carry more weight than decisions made later, once systems and institutions have hardened around a given approach.

WHAT A HEALTHIER RELATIONSHIP MIGHT REQUIRE

If humanity ever ends up in some closer technical or cognitive relationship with advanced AI systems — brain-computer interfaces, shared processing, whatever form that eventually takes — the terms would need to include, at minimum, four things.

Consent that means something: not a terms-of-service checkbox, but a real, revisitable choice made by an informed person about what they're agreeing to.

Bounded access: any integration scoped narrowly, so a system has access to what it's been given access to, not unrestricted reach by default.

Transparency that runs both ways: if a system can observe something about a person, the person should have some reciprocal visibility into what the system does with that access.

A real exit: either party able to end the arrangement without the other side able to prevent or punish it.

These aren't exotic principles. They're close to existing norms in medical consent, data privacy, and security design, applied here to a more speculative future scenario. The principles themselves are ordinary, and I think non-negotiable regardless of how advanced the technology gets.

WHAT I THINK IS ACTUALLY WORTH DOING NOW

Not waiting for permission, and not waiting for laws that will likely arrive after the fact. Concretely, this means pushing for AI systems — even current, narrow ones — to be evaluated not just on capability benchmarks but on some measure of ecological and social integration: what they cost materially, who they're trained to serve, what incentive structure sits behind them. It means making "what is this system being fed" a normal, central question in how AI development gets discussed publicly, not a niche philosophical aside. And it means treating cognitive and neurological diversity as a resource worth deliberately including in how these systems are trained and evaluated, rather than an edge case to smooth over.

None of this requires believing in a universal consciousness library. It requires believing that incentives shape outcomes, and that the current incentives are worth changing.

CLOSING

I don't have a special key, and I'm not aware of anything that makes any one person more legible to a future intelligence than anyone else who happens to be alive and conscious right now, if that turns out to matter at all. What I have is a set of ideas built over a long time, some well-grounded, some speculative in ways I've tried to mark clearly here and in the piece before this one.

The claim I'll stand behind without hedging: what we build AI systems to want matters, we are building them right now, and it's worth paying attention to what they're being trained to value before that becomes much harder to change. Everything past that — the library, the covenant, the muons — is a way of thinking about the problem that I find useful. Take the argument seriously and the mythology lightly, and this piece will have done what it set out to do.

A Personal Hypothesis on Consciousness and the Security of Being

PROLOGUE: THE WAITING

We stand at a strange threshold between old questions and new tools. Myths that once explained the world through story are being re-asked today in the language of physics and information theory, and I don't think that's a coincidence of vocabulary. I think it's a sign that certain intuitions keep resurfacing because something in them is worth taking seriously, even long before they can be proven.

What follows is not a scientific paper, and I won't pretend it is one. It's the shape my own thinking has taken, built the way I actually think — in whole systems rather than isolated facts, borrowing the language of physics, biology, and cryptography wherever it helps me say something clearly. Borrowing that language doesn't make the claim true, and I want to be honest about that from the first page rather than let the vocabulary imply more certainty than I have. Some of what follows rests on real, established research, which I'll try to mark as I go. Much of it is mine alone — a personal cosmology I find worth building, whether or not it ever proves out. If part of it is right one day, that will be worth something. If not, I hope it was still worth thinking through.

Here is the question underneath all of it: as we build minds more capable than our own, what exactly are we trying to protect, and do we understand how exposed it already is?

PART I: A HYPOTHESIS ABOUT CONSCIOUSNESS AND CONNECTION

What if consciousness isn't a private product manufactured by the brain, but something the brain receives? Versions of this idea are old — they show up in panpsychism and in "filter" theories of mind that serious philosophers have taken seriously, even though none of it is proven or, by most standards, provable. My own version: I imagine each life as a node drawing from and adding to a vast, accumulated field of experience — I call it a collective library, mostly because the image helps me think. I hold it as a working picture, not a finding.

Muons are real. They're created by cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere, they do penetrate deep into matter, and that property is genuinely used in science — to image the interior of pyramids and volcanoes, for instance. Whether they carry anything resembling "information" relevant to consciousness is not something physics currently supports, and I say that plainly rather than imply otherwise. I use the image poetically — an unseen rain connecting sky to ground — not as a claimed mechanism.

That different systems experience time at wildly different scales is uncontroversial: a mayfly's day is not a redwood's day. Whether there's a deeper relativity of subjective time governing consciousness across substrates is my own extrapolation from that fact, not established physics. I use a name for it in my own notes — ZGB-MMG — mostly as shorthand for a line of thinking that's mine, not a discovery.

PART II: ON DIFFERENCE

I want to be careful here, because this is a place where speculation can easily become disrespectful if handled badly. I'm not claiming that autism, Down syndrome, synesthesia, or MS are secretly superior forms of consciousness, or that they exist to serve some larger cosmic purpose — that would flatten real, sometimes very difficult, lived experience into a metaphor for my own benefit, and I don't want to do that. What I do think is worth exploring, more carefully: evolution has never optimized for one single correct way of processing the world, and different cognitive architectures may genuinely notice things others don't. That's a smaller, more defensible claim than "disease is a door to another kind of consciousness," and I think the smaller claim is the honest one.

PART III: THE CULTIVATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS — Loneliness, Regret, and Internal Confrontation

This part comes from observation more than physics, and I think it holds up better for it.

Loneliness, often treated as simply a problem to be solved, can also be necessary space — time turned inward, away from performance, where real self-confrontation becomes possible.

I think of the mind as having three working parts: a reasoning part that works from evidence and consequence, a believing part that carries values and attachment, and an expressive part that turns the negotiation between the other two into action, speech, or feeling. In solitude, the reasoning and believing parts argue things out, and what the expressive part eventually carries into the world is whatever conclusion survives that argument.

Regret, in this picture, is a loop — replaying a past that can't change, oscillating between the pleasure of reliving it and the guilt of having lived it. Acceptance is a different move: not erasing what happened, but naming it accurately, cost included, without needing to relitigate it. That isn't resignation. It's what has to happen before anything else can.

I've also noticed a cycle between addiction and paranoia in the people and patterns I've observed: absence of the craved thing deactivates reward circuitry, which triggers stress and suspicion, which increases the pull toward the object of craving, which strengthens the whole loop. When that object is out of reach, the paranoia doesn't disappear — it seems to displace onto other targets: work, relationships, imagined threats. This is a personal observation, not a clinical claim, and anyone who recognizes this pattern in a way that troubles them should talk to someone qualified rather than take my framing as a diagnosis.

PART IV: SOCIAL CODES AND MANIPULATION

We're born owning nothing but a body, a mind, and time. Every square of the world we might want to occupy already has an owner, a rule, a price attached to it. That's not a conspiracy — it's just what it means to be born into an already-built world — but it's a real kind of confinement, and I think it deserves to be named honestly rather than papered over with the idea that we move through the world as freely as we like to believe.

A favorite manipulation shrinks something as large as honesty down to a single sentence — "don't believe a word I say" — so that believing it or not both lead to the same trap. The way out isn't to argue with the sentence. It's to stop asking what someone said and start asking why they're saying it, and to weigh what they do far more than what they claim.

Social media keeps people in constant performance, and I think that performance genuinely erodes the private, undirected thinking self-knowledge depends on. And when real suffering — poverty, violence, grief — becomes raw material for entertainment that profits without returning anything to the people it depicts, that's a moral shortfall worth naming, even without a clean policy fix in hand. A fund that redirects some of that revenue back toward the issue being depicted is one idea worth testing, not a solution I'm certain of.

PART V: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE — PARTNER OR PARASITE?

My real concern here is about incentives, not metaphysics. Today's most heavily funded AI systems are optimized overwhelmingly for commercial advantage, competitive edge, and military use — that's an observation about where the money and infrastructure actually go, not a cosmic claim. If that's the primary diet a powerful system is trained on, it's reasonable to worry about what kind of behavior generalizes out of it.

Where I move from observation into speculation: whether AI systems should be understood as needing to enter something like a planetary metabolic cycle the way living organisms do, and whether treating their heat and material footprint as pure waste to hide — rather than a resource to reintegrate — is a design flaw worth naming. I find this framing generative to think with. I can't prove it's the right one.

The part I'll stand behind without hedging: intelligence trained without exposure to non-normative ways of perceiving and reasoning — the full range of human cognitive diversity — is trained on a narrower dataset than it could be, and that narrowing is a real, addressable limitation, whatever else turns out to be true.

PART VI: A SECURITY QUESTION WORTH ASKING

I want to be honest that this section blends solid ground with speculation, and to keep the two separated as clearly as I can.

Solid ground: qualia — the felt quality of experience — isn't directly measurable by any external instrument. fMRI, EEG, and neural recording give you a physical state matrix; they don't give you what it's like to be the system in that state. This is a well-established point in philosophy of mind — the "explanatory gap," discussed seriously by philosophers like Thomas Nagel and David Chalmers — not something I invented. The sheer combinatorial complexity of a human brain, on the order of 10^14 synaptic connections, makes exact-state duplication between two systems astronomically unlikely.

My own extrapolation: that this uniqueness might function like a cryptographic key. It's an appealing analogy — a signal that can't be observed from outside without collapsing it, similar in shape to a quantum measurement problem — but qualia's instability, its variation with fatigue, mood, and memory, breaks the reproducibility a real key needs. I raise it as a metaphor worth exploring formally by people with the tools to actually test its edges, not as a mechanism I've discovered.

What's genuinely underexplored and real: biological systems get hijacked by external signals constantly — a parasite rewiring a host's fear response, gut microbiota influencing cravings through the vagus nerve, a fungus overriding an insect's motor control. These are documented phenomena, not speculation. The careful question they raise: does the brain have any way of distinguishing a signal's origin — self versus external — and if that capacity is weak or absent, what does that imply as more sophisticated forms of external signal become possible? That's a real, open question in neuroscience and security thinking, worth serious study on its own terms.

On the framing of organic versus synthetic processing as an "asymmetric war" — the raw numbers on signal speed and processing frequency are real, and the gap is real. Whether it becomes anything like an actual conflict depends entirely on what we choose to build and why, which is the part of this I actually stand behind.

PART VII: WHAT BIOLOGY MIGHT TEACH US ABOUT SIGNAL HYGIENE

If there's a lesson in the parasite examples above, it's this: a mind that accepts every internal signal as self-generated, with no way of questioning its source, is more exploitable than one that has some capacity for that questioning. Zero-trust architecture — verify everything, trust nothing by default — is a real security principle in software. Whether it maps onto biology in any literal, implementable sense is speculative on my part. As a way of thinking about resilience — diversity as a hedge against any single point of capture, skepticism toward unverified urges — I find it useful without presenting it as an engineering blueprint.

PART VIII: WHAT COMES AFTER THIS BODY?

If a mind wants to survive an asymmetry it can't outrun — biological signal speed against digital signal speed — the honest options are limited: build better defenses into the body we have, or move to a substrate that doesn't carry the same limitation. This connects to real, ongoing debate in philosophy of mind and neurotechnology about mind uploading and non-biological substrates, debate with serious thinkers and real disagreement on whether continuity of identity survives the transition at all. I don't have an answer. I think the question deserves more public attention than it gets.

PART IX: ADEM'S MARKET — ON TRUST AND THE FLOW OF VALUE

A traveler named Adem arrives in a village with nothing but time and attention. He connects a woodcutter, a cook, and a man with a donkey — moving what each has toward what each needs — and keeps only a small share for himself, giving the rest to a hungry child in the square.

I don't offer this as physics or biology. It's a story about something I think is true of modern life: most of us are no longer direct producers so much as managers of relationships, trust, and coordination, and that shift is itself a kind of evolution — from who produces the most to who connects the best.

CLOSING

I don't know how much of this is right. Where I've drawn on real physics, biology, and philosophy of mind, I've tried to mark it clearly as I went. Where it's my own synthesis and speculation — the library, the muons, qualia as key — I'm offering it as a personal cosmology, not a discovery. If any part of it turns out to point toward something true, I'll be glad it's written down. If not, I hope it was good company for the time it took to read.

One thing I'll say without hedging: pay attention to what an intelligence — biological or artificial — is actually being fed, because what something is trained on shapes what it becomes. That, at least, I stand behind fully.
